Way Out West (photo)
This film rates as one of Laurel and Hardy's best features, along with Sons of the Desert.
Following the death of a friend, the duo travel to Brushwood Gulch to deliver the deeds to a goldmine
to their friend's daughter. James Finlayson is the owner of the saloon, who deviously presents
his girl friend as the daughter Stan and Ollie are looking for. Taken in by the deception, they
hand over the deed. However, they soon discover the real daughter who is working as a maid in
the saloon, and set out to retrieve the document. With wonderful acting for instance by Finlayson
who relishes his evil cunning, the famous songs like In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia,
and hilarious scenes, this film remains a favourite with Laurel and Hardy fans, and is
often shown on tv.
Pick a Star
A charming film musical in which Laurel and Hardy play a number of long sequences.

With lots of padding and drawn out scenes, this is a disappointing effort although audiences
generally liked it. It contains the scene of the duo transporting a heavy piano over a
trestle bridge -- on which they encounter a gorilla...

In this final film made with Hal Roach, Stan plays a soldier stuck in a WW I timewarp. He is
found 20 years after the war has ended, and his story appears in the newspapers. Ollie reads it,
and recognises his old friend. He visits him in the soldiers' home where he finds Stan sitting in
a wheelchair with a leg folded underneath him. Ollie wrongly assumes Stan has been injured
in the war and decides to look after him... Once the confusion about Stan's "disability" has
been sorted out, Ollie takes Stan home to his wife, who announces she has had enough of her husband
bringing home bums, and leaves. Stan proceeds to cause all sorts of mayhem, revealing
he has not changed much in the 20 years. Somehow, the boys get involved with the blond neighbour
just as her husband and Mrs Hardy arrive home. The boys beat a hasty retreat.

The Flying Deuces (photo)
The first L&H film for over a year was eagerly awaited by fans, but was a disappointing effort.
The Roach magic had gone, although there were a few good jokes (the film was made at
RKO Studios). In the film, Laurel and Hardy
join the Foreign Legion to help Hardy get over a disastrous love affair.
