A Chump at Oxford (photo)
Back at Roach, Laurel and Hardy made this film in which they play street cleaners who foil
a bank robbery. As a reward, they get their dearest wish -- an education at Oxford, England.
During their time there, Stan is hit on the head and beocme the incarnation of
a highly respected English mathematical genius and sportsman. Whilst in this state, he makes
Ollie his personal servant Eventually, Stan is hit on the head again, and his old personality returns.
Under the direction of Alfred Goulding -- a director Laurel and Hardy had previously avoided --
the film falls flat, even though it has some good scenes.

The duo's last film made with Roach has two distinct halves, with the forst one being far superior.
Stan and Ollie work in a horn factory where Ollie is driven mad by the constant honking. On the advice
of his doctor, they rent an old boat with the aim of resting in the harbour, listening to the
peaceful waves. But an escaped killer climbs on board (Dick Cramer) and things go from bad
to worse. At the request of Ollie, Stan plays his trombone, which sends Ollie into a frenzy,
enabling him to subdue the killer. Unfortunately, when the police come Stan demonstrates how the trick
worked, and Ollie takes out his rage on the cops, and ends up being put in a cell with the murderer.

Released by 20th Centry Fox, the film has Laurel and Hardy starring as assitants to a playboy
who gets drafted into the army. To ensure he will be ok, the duo also enlist. It soon
turns out that the playboy can be a man in his own right. Stan and Ollie, meanwhile,
get into trouble with a tough sergeant. It is not a particularly brilliant film,
but did fairly well with audiences in the war years.

A-Haunting We Will Go
Dante the Magician joins Laurel and Hardy in this unremarkable film. Critics didn't like it,
but the audiences still flocked to see it.
Film Titles 1943
Air Raid Wardens
As air raid wardens, Stan and Ollie manage to prevent a German plan to blow up a magnesium
plant. Made at MGM.
Jitterbugs (photo)
Laurel and Hardy returned to Fox to make this feature, considered the best of their last nine films.
They come to the aid of a night-club singer, and defeat villians who are set to harm her career.
The Dancing Masters
Not too bad a film either, in which the boys play dance teachers. The film has some good scenes,
but Laurel and Hardy are starting to show their age.
Film Titles 1944
The Big Noise
Described as the worst feature film Laurel and Hardy made, it stars the boys as janitors working
for a private detective agency. They pretend to be private eyes themselves, and get involved
in protecting an inventor and his super bomb.
Nothing But Trouble
The boys play a chef and butler in a mansion where they
discover a plot to assassinate a boy-king, and save his life.

The Bullfighters
Nearly at the end of their career together, Laurel and Hardy made this poor quality
film in which they visit Mexico as private detectives. Stan looks just like a matador
who has gone missing, and is just about to take the place of his double in the ring
when the real bullfighter appears, confusing everyone.

Atoll K (photo)
In this film, also known as Utopia, the duo inherit an island and a yacht and set out
to claim their inheritance. On their way to the island, the boat sinks but Stan, Ollie and
their two companions are rescued by an atoll which emerges from the waves. On the atoll,
uranium is discovered which attracts attention of unscrupulous individuals. The atoll
then sinks, ending the battle, and Stan and Ollie are rescused by a passing ship.
